Norma & Norman Bates

The Bates Motel is loosely based on the novel "Psycho", just that the drama series has got five seasons, so it is a whole lot longer than a book. As much as it was a psychotic show, the show was about an emotionally troubled mother (victim of unspeakable abuse), doing her darndest best to handle a troubled minded son (whom I feel, were the effects of having a victimized mother). I feel so sad for the two of them, they are a classic case of "bad things happening to good people" with troubles and mess going out-of-control, one lie (murder) covering another one. Endless lies (murders) escalating to a volcano of troubles they could no longer cover up.

 They uprooted to start anew.

They sincerely wanted an uneventful life
(Norma Bates)

They bought a motel to run as a business, go to regular schools, make regular friends.

(her overly attached son- Norman Bates)
They sincerely thought they would be able to live it out.
But it wasn't so.
Troubles have their way of finding them.

The only character in the show whom I wished will not be killed.
Dylan, the elder son.

Emma- wife of Dylan
Her mom was murdered by Norman

Still, Dylan was the only kin left (after Norma was murdered by Norman)
He was torn between reporting his brother to the authorities and
attempting to talk his brother out (of his psychosis)

In the end, it was inevitable that Dylan had to fire a shot at Norman.

 As he dies..................

 He sees his mom.................

 The two co-depending souls...............

Time toggles back and forth, young or old, it doesn't make a difference.

Despite all the happenings that went deadly wrong,

The motherly love, and a child's love, there could be no wrong to it
but the society is not made for them.

Alas, one true, innocence prevailed.
Only Dylan survived the whole mess, and sweet Emma found it in her to reconcile.

As I watched the series, I think that all mothers (or parents) should not over-burden their children with their troubles. I don't mean normal troubles, I mean those mentally or emotionally overburdening troubles. Young minds are not developed to handle complex, conflicting troubles. When those troubling stuff gets circled in the young brains, they don't get purged like how adults may be able to balance themselves. I would think that by nature, a child loves his mother deeply. Then an overbearing mother gets overly worried over the imbalanced child and then it becomes a vicious cycle. Co-dependent on being in troubled love.
