Disney's Maleficent

The wings are magnificent, her flights makes me wanna soar. The only thing missing are fangs. But that would be confusing wouldn't it. As it is, the movie is already mashed up. The gist is based on Sleeping Beauty, but with several alterations including a total role reversal from the original Disney Sleeping Beauty which was by the way; an adaptation of other original works, for your info; Sleeping Beauty tales existed before 1697 in history's archives. Although the narrative voice-over for Disney's Maleficent explains the plot, I feel that a lot more could have been built up instead of narrating. For instance, there was not enough building up scenes of young Maleficent's friendship or puppy love with Stefan (eventually King Stefan), hence the anguish, betrayal and hatred she haboured didn't quite come through. Perhaps extremities in dark or evil expressions have to be toned down in Disney movies, I'm not sure, but surely Jolie is capable of being more expressive; in a way, her performance felt held, like she held her horses. At the same time, her emotional deployment at the end of the story was not too bad although in my head I've already predicted the twist and was unfazed. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the costumes especially her pair of powerful wings and the scarlet lip colour.
